NonebutCantyandHugoreallydislikedhim. Someoftheotherslikedhim, andalladmiredhispluckandspirit. Duringtwoorthreedays, Hugo, inwhosewardandchargetheKingwas, didwhathecovertlycouldtomaketheboyuncomfortable; andatnight, duringthecustomaryorgies, heamusedthecompanybyputtingsmallindignitiesuponhim—alwaysasifbyaccident. TwicehesteppedupontheKing's toes—accidentally—andtheKing, asbecamehisroyalty, wascontemptuouslyunconsciousofitandindifferenttoit; butthethirdtimeHugoentertainedhimselfinthatway, theKingfelledhimtothegroundwith a cudgel, totheprodigiousdelightofthetribe. Hugo, consumedwithangerandshame, sprangup, seized a cudgel, andcameathissmalladversaryin a fury. Instantly a ringwasformedaroundthegladiators, andthebettingandcheeringbegan.

Hisfranticandlubberly 'prentice-workfoundbut a poormarketforitselfwhenpittedagainstanarmwhichhadbeentrainedbythefirstmastersofEuropeinsingle-stick, quarter-staff, andeveryartandtrickofswordsmanship. Hewassentoutwith a tinkertohelphimathiswork; hewouldnotwork; moreover, hethreatenedthetinkerwithhisownsoldering-iron; andfinallybothHugoandthetinkerfoundtheirhandsfullwiththemerematterofkeepinghisfromgettingaway. Thusseveraldayswentby; andthemiseriesofthistrampinglife, andthewearinessandsordidnessandmeannessandvulgarityofit, becamegraduallyandsteadilysointolerabletothecaptivethathebeganatlasttofeelthathisreleasefromthehermit's knifemustproveonly a temporaryrespitefromdeath, atbest.
Themorningafterthatcombat, Hugogotupwith a heartfilledwithvengefulpurposesagainsttheKing. Hehadtwoplans, inparticular. Onewastoinflictupontheladwhatwouldbe, tohisproudspiritand 'imagined' royalty, a peculiarhumiliation; andifhefailedtoaccomplishthis, hisotherplanwastoput a crimeofsomekindupontheKing, andthenbetrayhimintotheimplacableclutchesofthelaw.

Inpursuanceofthefirstplan, hepurposedtoput a 'clime' upontheKing's leg; rightlyjudgingthatthatwouldmortifyhimtothelastandperfectdegree; andassoonastheclimeshouldoperate, hemeanttogetCanty's help, andforcetheKingtoexposehisleginthehighwayandbegforalms. 'Clime' wasthecanttermfor a sore, artificiallycreated. Tomake a clime, theoperatormade a pasteorpoulticeofunslakedlime, soap, andtherustofoldiron, andspreaditupon a pieceofleather, whichwasthenboundtightlyupontheleg. Thiswouldpresentlyfretofftheskin, andmakethefleshrawandangry-looking; bloodwasthenrubbeduponthelimb, which, beingfullydried, tookon a darkandrepulsivecolour.
