1. 4월 1일

2
1st. Saturday. Cloudy.

3
Seoul home. Went to Keijo Y.M.C.A. 7 p.m. to hear Mr. Saito's lecture on the great Christian Students' Conference he had attended in the city of Madras, India. His talk was interesting and instructive. While he talked I couldn't help amusing myself with tow wandering thoughts. He said there were represented at the Conference nationalities or races. Many of them from Africa, New Zealand, Australia, India etc. all subject to the British rule. Why couldn't Japan be big hearted enough to let Korea Y. be represented as a distinct unit?(2nd) Ghandi is undoubtedly a great man. But Britain is great in that she has let Ghandi become great. Spain, Germany or even France would have killed him 30 years ago.

15
Seoul home. Hear Mr. Nam Koong Uk 南宮憶, Candler's father-in-law died this morning. Thus another old friend is gone.
16
At noon attended 張東殷's wedding ceremony at Citizens' Hall. He is one of our 璋善's best friends. 璋善 acted one of his best men while 琦善 played wedding march for him.
17
Met Mr. 芮鍾錫 at the Station. He told me that late Pak Yung Chul spent about ¥40,000.00 a year in entertainments. It is a costly business to work one's-self into the good graces of our ruling friends.

6. 4월 6일

19
6th. Thursday. Bright and calm.

20
Seoul home. Our two boys, 璋善 and 琦善 left Seoul for Tokyo per 2:10 express. God crown them with loving kindness and tender mercies every day every where through long any happy years.
21
My youngest sister-in-law, Chi-Chang's wife feel into a swoon about 3 p.m. In addition to her anxieties about her husband who has been detained in prison for nearly a month, she is excessively worried about her young brother 孫元泰 who on his way to Korea was detained in the Nagasaki Police Station for 3 months. He was released from there and got to Seoul a few days ago. He was again arrested by the East Police day before yesterday. Then he was transferred to the Provincial police Bureau on charges which we don't know. Sister-in-law who has swooning fits whenever she has trouble refuses to eat anything so that she is mentally and physically exhausted. If she were sensible woman she would make efforts to eat to keep up her strength for the sake of her little children.
22
Has invited to supper at Dr. Ryang's house. Mr. and Mrs. Yu O.K., Mrs. Byon, Miss Sohn Jung Kiu, cousin Chi Yung and wife present. Had a pleasant evening.

8. 4월 8일

27
8th. Saturday. Lovely.

28
Seoul home. Papers report that Italy mobilized land, sea and air forces to gobble up little Albania to protect Italian interests to maintain the peace of Southern Europe just as Germany annexed Austria and Czechoslovakia to preserve the peace of Central Europe. In the face of the face that Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden are happy and prosperous without a crushing navy or an extravagant army or a single colony and that Switzerland and Denmark, two happiest countries have no cotton, no iron, no coal, no gold, no rubber, no oil―in the face of these facts I can't understand why Germany and Italy should sacrifice so much treasure and lives of their own lands as well as those of other countries―just to add few more square miles to their already large enough dominions.
29
12 morning went to Bando Hotel to give a welcome luncheon in honor of Mr. Tanaka, a former director of Foreign Affairs Bureau and who is on his way to Tokyo from Peking. That he is popular among the Koreans of various groups was shown by the presence of near 30 men at a short notice.

36
Seoul home. Was informed his morning that both the resignation of Miss Alice Appenzeller and the nomination of Miss Helen Kim had been approved of by the Education Bureau of Government General.
37
In the iniquitous treaty of Versailles France acted Shylock believing she could keep Germany poor and weak for long years to come. Had France been more generous in her hours of triumph by treating Germany on the principle of "Live and let live" Europe might have been saved from the crises of these days.

11. 4월 11일

39
11th. Tuesday. Cloudy. Windy.

40
Seoul home. Invited Miss Helen Kim and Dr. Ryang to a sukiyaki supper at Yedogawa 6 p.m. Dr. Ryang and I suggested to her (1) that she should admit more men into the College cabinet, (2) that one or two Japanese teachers should be added to the cabinet, (3) some Japanese pastors be invited to teach or lecture on religious topics once or twice a week, (4) that care should be taken not to alienate the good will of missionaries in or out of the school.

Seoul home. A most welcome rain from sometime last night until 2 p.m.

13. 4월 13일

45
13th. Thursday. Misty rain a.m.

46
Seoul home. 2 p.m. went to Citizens' Hall to hear Major Kim Suk Won lecture. The big Hall jammed with people of every description. He talked two long hours on what he experienced in the battle fields. The detachment which he led opened the first attack of the China war at Nam Won. The actual scenes which he described so vividly must have been infinitely more horrible in action than in words.
47
7:30 p.m. went to Gray House to attend a meeting of the Board of Managers of Ewha College. Decided not to have any inauguration exercises, the times not allowing showy demonstarations especially in Christian institutions.

62
Seoul home. At noon attended the wedding ceremony of Mr. 洪正求's son, 洪鍾珍 at the Citizens' Hall.
63
6 p.m. Dr. Helen Kim invited Dr. Rayang and me to supper at Chosun Hotel to meet Mr. Pak Yung Kyun(朴永均) ―one of the members of the Ewha Board of Managers. Pak is reputed one of the most shrewd and successful land manipulators in Song Do. He has charge of the Ewha land investment concern. Dr. R. and I tried to persuade him not to resign his position on the Board as we need a business man to look after the financial side of Ewha College. He said he was disgusted the other day when the Board passed the College budget with a deficit of ¥4,000.00. He finds the books which Miss Hall keeps are not business-like and that there seems to be no in the office to keep everything and everybody in its place.

76
Seoul home. 8 a.m. went to Chosun Hotel where a few members of the Korea Y.M.C.A. and of the Keijo Y. invited Hon. Omura, the president of the South Manchuria R.R. Co. to a breakfast. Mr. Omura is one of those thorough going Christian of the best samurai type as true as the finest Japanese blade. In spite of his fearless Christian standing, the unbelieving Japanese officialdom has not only retained him in prominent positions in the great R.R. departments in Korea and then in Manchuria but has promoted him to the presidency of the South Manchuria R.R. System, simply because they have found him in valuable and indispensable. He is sweet, modest and clean. He said he made himself known to everybody in Manchuria that he wouldn't accept any invitation to those extravagant entertainments where "sake" and "gesha" figure so prominently. "I had to choose between these everlasting entertainments in which I have no pleasure and my work to which I am bound to give undivided devotion and time. I chose the latter and nobody is worse for it."

Seoul home. While father was in exile in Nung-Ju(from 1887 to 1894) he had a servant girl called Nam-Hui and a valet named Cin Yung Do. In 1893 Nam Hui gave birth to a boy. There being a gossip that no one knew who was the father of the boy―whether my father or Cin Yung Do. Father thought it best to decide the question by calling the servant girl and Cin Yung Do to his presence and told them positively that the boy was Cin's child and not his. My mother was also present then. In 1894 when father and family returned to Seoul they brought the servants with them When I returned to Korea in February 1895 I saw the servant girl and the valet, Cin Yung Do and also the child, then called Jum-Dong-i! In March 1895 when father and mother left Seoul for Ul-San where he had to go as its military commander Cin Yung Do was sent back to his country Wha Soon, with his child on his back while the girl Nam-hui was kept as servant. Between 1896 and 1904 father went to Kwang-ju as governor of Junla Nam Do twice living there altogether four years. He had plenty opportunity to take the child to himself if he had the least inclination or belief that the child was his own. But he did nothing of the sort and never mentioned it to me either verbally or in writing. In 19 cousin Chi-Oh, went to Wha Soon and hunted out Cin Jum-Dong and told him he was my father's son, therefore his cousin!

Seoul home. The Ewha College Alumni Association invited a score of friends and a few members of the Board of Managers to a Chinese supper at 雅叙園 to welcome Miss Helen Kim as the new President and Dr. Alice Appenzeller as the Honorary President, of the College.
97
(Cin Jum Dong affair continued) . Sometime in 19 Jum Dong came to our house and claimed to be my father's son. Mother called him to her room and in the presence of Chi-Wang, Chi Chang, myself and of 尹鶴淳 and distinctly told Jum Dongi that father had disclaimed when he was born and that since father is deal there is nobody who can prove that he is the son of my father. This Cin Jum Dong has lately filed a petition at the local court in Seoul addressing a procurator as his defendant demanding that he (Cin Jum Dong-i) be recognized as the 庶子 or concubine-born-son of my father. To protect my and my family interests I had to engage a lawyer (沈相立) to fight the case out. For this miserable affair giving me so much worry and trouble in mind and body the wretched cousin Chi-Oh is responsible.

103
Seoul home. 10:30 a.m. attended the memorial service at Ryong San Drill Ground held in honor of the brave men who died for the country in battle fields from Meji 15(1885) to present day. Both Shinto and Buddhist Priests officiated. It is wonderful how so many countless millions of men and women can believe that these priests, with their picturesque robes and incomprehensible rituals and unknowable chants, know more about the spirit-world beyond the veil than any of us.
104
From 7:30 to 10 p.m. attended a lecture by Vice AdmiralHada of the Scientific Research Association. I slept most of the time.
