2
1st. Monday. Beautiful.

Seoul home. Rather chilly in the morning. Dr. Mott's conference begna from 9:30 a.m. at the Womens' Seminary. About 48 people, Koreans and missionaries present―most of them, Christian members of the Korean National Council. The object of the meeting to consider some of the problems of the Christian Church in Korea and to confer with reference to plans for a conference to be held in Asia in 1938 of the International Missionary Council.
4
The wonderful man gave out of the rich treasury of his long and worldwide experience advices and suggestions full of wisdom and practical sense. Some of his saying or quotations: "Nine tenths of wisdom is to be wise in time". (T. Roosevelt) "You may fool all men for sometime, and some men for all time; but you can't fool all men for all time". "The range of leadership is the ability of co-operating with others―especially those who have different views from him".
5
The Government General entertained Dr. Mott to a dinner at his official residence. I was one of the few Koreans invited.

2. 4월 2일

7
2nd. Tuesday. Beautiful.

8
Seoul home. Mott's conference from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 8 p.m. Kim Kwan Sik, Dr. Ryang and I invited Kim Jung Sik and other anti-Cynn men to Chosen Hotel to negotiate a reconciliation with pro-Cynn party but failed.

3. 4월 3일

10
3rd. Wednesday. Beautiful.

11
Seoul home. From 9:30 to 12, Dr. Mott held a conference with the members of the National Council of Korean Y.M.C.A.s and of the staff of Central Y. He emphasized the great importance of reviving the student work in Korea.
12
Dr. Mott invited some of the members of the National Council of Christian Churches to lunch at the Chosen Hotel. He suggested that Mr. Wilbur might be persuaded to act as Honorary Secretary of the Council―to be reconstructed. Everybody present heartily approved of the plan. 3 p.m. Dr. Mott left Seoul for Japan. Of the Large crowd who came to the station to see him off, I felt the parting most keenly as I asked myself the question "Will we meet again the next time, say 5 or 7 years from now, that wonderful man pays us another visit". God be with him till we meet again!
13
3:30 p.m. a meeting of the Y. National Council met at the Central Y. All the members present except Mr. Cha of Wonsan. Yu Ok Kyum acted his proxy. Cynn's resignation was accepted 12 out of 15 votes―three members didn't vote.

4. 4월 4일

15
4th. Thursday. Beautiful.

16
Seoul home. Mr. Jon Yo Han celebrated the 61st anniversary of his father's birthday at Myong Wol Kwan. A big crowd.

5. 4월 5일

18
5th. Friday. Beautiful.

19
Seoul home. This morning, our 珽善 entered the jai Dong Primary School. The precious baby of ours has taken the first step in the long and arduous pilgrimage to the promised land of education. God grant he will have strong body and sound mind all the way to the highest stage of education he can get in the east. God grant further that his education when all successfully finished in time, shall prove a great blessing to him making him a blessing to his family and to his people.

6. 4월 6일

21
6th. Saturday. Beautiful.

22
Seoul home Cynn found the Central Y. a going concern 15 years ago with a reserve fund nearly, or over 10 thousand Yen and goodly number of members. He left it a wreck in finance in membership and in morale. As to the National Council of Korean Y..M.C.A's, the only thing he has kept intact is his salary. He alienated the good will of the people of Pyong Yang, of Tai Koo, of Ham Hung, of Sun Chun to the extent he dared not visit these places. The student Y. work has simply gone out of sight. He was a success in making the Y. serve his intrigues and interests but he proved a failure so far as the Y. work goes.

7. 4월 7일

24
7th. Sunday. Beautiful.

25
Seoul home. Hong Pyong Sun tells me Hyon Dong Wan consented, to serve as a traveling secretary of the Y. National Council, with the intimation that he would like to be made the Vice Secretary of the Council. I told Hong, Hyon ought consent to serve in the spirit of the Master who washed the feet of His disciples. Any haggling over the amount of salary or title would at once lower his character in the estimate of the Executive Committee of the Council.

8. 4월 8일

27
8th. Monday. Beautiful.

28
Seoul home. 9 a.m. to 12 to the school with 珽善.
29
The "Emperor of manchu Kuo". so called is paying a visit to the Mikado and the Japanese nation is entertaining him as if he were a real ruler of a real state. By the way, suppose the Emperor of Manchu Kuo, should head an army of 100,000 well trained and well equipped soldiers(mostly Japanese) and march on Peking. Suppose further that he should install himself in his ancestral Palace or palaces from which he had been expelled by force and claim such parts of China, north of the Yellow Sea as he can capture and hold―well who can say he is in the wrong?

9. 4월 9일

31
9th. Tuesday. April shower all day.

32
Seoul home. To the school with 珽善 from 9 a.m. to 12.
33
The Committee which the Executive Committee of the National Council of Korean Y.M.C.A's had appointed sometime ago to remake its future activities met at the Lily Garden Restaurant. Present Messrs. Yu Ok Kyum, Ryang Joo Sam, Koo Ja Ok, Barnhart and myself. After the budget for 1935 was patched up at least on the paper, the recommendation of a suitable man for the position of traveling secretary was in order I was surprized that Mr. Yu Ok kyum brought forward Yun Chi Yung(尹致暎) my cousin No. 6 for the position. He may be the right person in the right place, but he has been away from the country for over 15 years and has had no experience in the Korean Y. work. Then again he being my own cousin. people may accuse me of nepotism. I recommended Hyon Dong Wan for the place.

10. 4월 10일

35
10th. Wednesday. Cloudy―Chilly.

36
Seoul home. To the school with 珽善.
37
Called on Koo Ja Ok and strongly recommended why Hyon Dong Wan is better man than any new comer because Hyon has had 15 years experience in the work.

11. 4월 11일

39
11th. Thursday. Beautiful―Cold.

40
Seoul home. It is the Samurai with his war-like virtues that has made Japan what she is. But the Samurai is the flower and the fruit of intensive feudalism which cultivated and perfected the war-like and war-loving qualities of the japanese nation for the last 15 or 20 centuries. The external system of feudalism was abolished 80 years ago but the qualities―some virtuous and some vicious―still remain to make Japanese the only non-white race that stands on equal terms with the proud white nations.

12. 4월 12일

42
12th. Friday. Beautiful. Cold.

43
Seoul home. This being the birthday of brother Chi Chang, mother, wife, Mary, Margaret, 珽善 and I, went to his home which used to be Dr. Cable's house in the C.C.C. Campus 12 morning. Lunch and supper. Returned about 7 p.m. Chi-Chang and wife with their little baby live in that house all by themselves, American fashion. No servant, no telephone in the house. Suppose somebody got sick in the night― worse still when rainy weather makes the place more isolated from its sparse neighbors― what are they going to do?

13. 4월 13일

45
13th. Saturday. Beautiful.

46
Seoul home. These last few days, morning and evenings are cold or chilly enough to make a little fire in the stove comfortable.
47
2 p.m. the Parents Association of the Normal Primary School for Boys(男子師普) held its Annual Meeting in the school. The agenda had nothing but routine reports. But what made the occasion so sweet and tender to me was the fact that every room, every hall, in fact every inch of the play ground of this school is full of the sweetest associations with our 璋善 and 琦善 who studied and played in those rooms and on this ground each for six long years. But for the fact that the school is to be moved to the East Gate, I would have put our baby 珽善 in the school too.

14. 4월 14일

49
14th. Sunday. Rain all day.

50
Seoul home.

15. 4월 15일

52
15th. Monday. Showers a.m. Sun late p.m.

53
Seoul home. Positively cold.
54
12 morning went to the Myong Wol Kwan, the wedding ceremony of the 3rd brother of Mr. Pak Jei Bong took place. A large crowd of Seoul yangbans.
55
Mr. Kwon Dong Jin wrote me a note today asking me to lend him ¥1,00000. Now, this is a large sum for a Korean to ask another to lend―just on the strength of a mere acquaintance, especially when "to lend" simply means "to give". I have too many obligations to fulfil to give away so much money for nothing. The spirit of parasitism is a great curse of the Korean people. Look at this fellow Y.H.S. Since I have sold the land outside of the South Gate, he has nothing to do. Because he was originally engaged to collect rentals, he wouldn't lift a finger to do any other work―on the ground that it is none of his business. Yet, he takes ¥6500 per month just for doing nothing.

16. 4월 16일

57
16th. Tuesday. Pretty. Cold.

58
Seoul home. 4:30 p.m. went to the Jai Dong Primary School to attend a reception given by the Patrons' Association in honor of then new Principal and two new teachers. Everything went off all right but sake and beer flowed too freely for a reception of this kind.

17. 4월 17일

60
17th. Wednesday. Lovely.

61
Seoul home. We have been getting our supply of house boys from Kwa Chun for the last ten years. They are less stupid than boys from villages further down South. Yet they are stupid enough. When they first come they are docile and diligent but soon they get citified―then they become lazy and often in reliable. Another common trait they have is that they are so shiftless in money matters. They show no ambition to learn even the Korean eun moon. They don't seem to think.

18. 4월 18일

63
18th. Thursday. Lovely.

64
Seoul home. The Joong Ang Il Po has invited a soccer team from Shanghai―Said to be a crack team. Of course the local teams mostly composed of middle school or college boys can't hope to put up a winning fight against the visitors. But what I most earnestly wish is that the Shanghai team will teach our men a point or two in matters of sportsmanship.
65
The Chinese community gave a welcome reception to the Shanghai team at the Kum Kok Won Restaurant 6:30 p.m. I was invited; so I went there to pay my respect to the Chinese host and the team but didn't stay for the supper.

19. 4월 19일

67
19th. Friday. Lovely.

68
Seoul home 4:30 the soccer match game between the Shanghai team and the student team(Korea) was staged on the Municipal Ground. A fine crowd of spectators―estimated about 4,000. The Chinese team won 2 to 0. But the Korean student team played finer than feared.
69
The Athletic Association of Seoul entertained the Chinese team to a Korean supper at the Bright Moon Restaurant. The Chinese Consul General, Mr. 范 seems to be a-good-fellow-well-met. With a nation of 400,000,000 this representative of the Fower Kingdom could easily be the first in the diplomatic circle in Korea―in fact any where in the East. But the damned and damnable internecine conflicts between the different sections and between the beastly Bolshevists and the National Government keeps China a weak, therefore, as contemptible as Korea enlarged. Too bad. But China has a future. Can you say that much about Korea?

20. 4월 20일

71
20th. Saturday. Lovely.

72
Seoul home. 12, the Leprosy Prevention Society met at the Chosen Hotel to report what it has done during the last year. Nearly 2 p.m. the Parent's Association of the Normal Primary School for Boys' met in the school. Routine business discussed and passed.

21. 4월 21일

74
21st. Sunday. Beautiful.

75
Seoul home. 11 a.m. worshipped at 宗稿 Church. Gave a little talk on the 50th Anniversary of the arrival of Dr. Appenzeller and his wife in Korea.
76
Attended at 2 p.m., the semi-official ceremony of organizing the Korea Chapter of Naval Association. Everything―the constitution(?) , the officers etc. of the Association all cut and dried. All we had to do was to clap our humble obedient hands to show our approval of what the powers that be had decided to do.
77
Went to the Municipal Ground to see the match game between the Shanghai team and the All Seoul team. Both sides fought well―the result Korean team won 2 to one. A big crowd. Wang, the president of the Chinese Merchants' Guild in Korea seemed so vexed or mad that he could hardly speak out―he simply mumbled something which I couldn't make out. I suppose he tried to say that he was glad the Korean team had won(?) or that he wasn't mad at the defeat of the Chinese team(?) ! Such is the narrowness of human nature.
78
8 p.m. to the Chinese Consulate General for dinner which was given in honor of the Shanghai team. The Chinese Consul is a pleasant man of the world.

22. 4월 22일

80
22nd. Monday. Cloudy―Chilly.

81
Seoul home. 5 p.m. with wife called on 再玉 at her new home.

23. 4월 23일

83
23rd. Tuesday. Lovely.

84
Seoul home. Last night about 12:30 I was awakened and called to wife's room, whose blood pressure so high that she could hardly breathe. She had such a pain between throat and the diaphragm that she couldn't even lie down. Dr. Im Myung Jai was phoned for who kindly came and gave an injection which relieved her pain. A severe case of indigestion seemed to have aggravated her ailment.

24. 4월 24일

86
24th. Wednesday. Beautiful.

87
Seoul home. Wife a little better.
88
3 p.m. went to the station to see the Chinese soccer team pass on their way to Japan. They sustained a defeat in Pyong Yang 4 to 2 in favor of the Korean team. Was glad to hear that the Pyong Yang Boys played very fair. The reason of the Chinese defeat was that two of their best men couldn't play on account of some muscle trouble in their legs.

25. 4월 25일

90
25th. Thursday. Beautiful.

91
Seoul home. Went to the Boy's Normal Primary School to meet with the Committee which the Parents' Association had appointed to study the problem of the children's Library in case the school is removed to Hoon Ryon Won, The Library was built by the Association some 5 years ago and the parents would hate to see it turned over to somebody without having a corresponding building put up by the Government on the new site. Mr. Han Man Hui and I were asked by the Committee to call on the Director of Education Bureau petitioning him to see to it that a similar building might be provided for the children when they move to the new school.

26. 4월 26일

93
26th. Friday. Beautiful.

94
Seoul home. From 9:30 to 11 attended the morning session of the Annual Conference. Returning home had and attack of diarrhea. Kept in bed rest of the day.
95
Kwang Hyon seems to have had an altercation with Yu Ok Kyum. Kwang Hyon is such a morbidly sensitive fellow that he is almost always on the edge of quarrel with somebody. Yu must be tired of him. I wouldn't care a rap if he got fired from the C.C.C. today but for our dear Mary. Kwang Hyon's plan and plot are to sponze on me as Laura's wretched husband does. They are dirty parasites!

27. 4월 27일

97
27th. Saturday. Rain 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.

98
Seoul home. Attended the Annual Conference from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The Jung Dong First Methodist Church―I wish that building were kept cleaner with more comfortable benches. A barn-like structure with exceedingly poor acoustics, a dirt covered platform, dirty floor; ugly uncomfortable benches―these things dampens rather than inspire religious emotions. So far, missionaries as well as Korean pastors, pay more attention to the seating capacity than to the esthetic surroundings of Churches.
99
3 p.m. went to the station to say Good bye―probably the last one―to dear Dr. and Mrs. Hadie. God grant the remaining years of these two shall be years of peace and joy in their home land!
100
4 p.m. a welcome reception to the delegates of the Conference in the Church.

28. 4월 28일

103

29. 4월 29일

105
29th. Monday. Lovely―Cool.

106
Seoul home. 11 a.m. attended the mass celebration of the imperial birthday on the square of the Central Shrine.
107
2 p.m. to the Kyong Hoi Roo where the Governor General gave a reception to an immense crowd in honor of the day.
108
According to a newspaper report, a Juvenile Blood Brotherhood was unearthed sometime last December. Of the 5 or so leading lights of the gang, the oldest was 20 years. The boy who was commissioned to kill Marquis Saionji was only 17 years old! Their plot was to assassinate several distinguished men in official and business circles. The spirit of "Kill-or-Die" or "Kill-and-Die", is the soul and essence of Yamado Tamashi or Japanese Spirit. When properly directed, the Kill or die spirit makes the Japanese the most fearless fighters in the world. When misapplied it turns out hysterical assassins, among whose victims during last 60 years, one may count some of the finest men the glorious Meji era has produced.

30. 4월 30일

110
30th. Tuesday. Rain. Cool.

111
Seoul home. Showers on and off.
112
Went to the night session of the Conference 8 p.m. Was pleased to see the Committee appointed to investigate the charges which the Positive Bandits and the Yu Ji Hoi(Anti-Cynn) had filed against each other, reject both petitions as unworthy of consideration.
