9
3rd. Saturday. Beautiful morning and evening.

10
Very hot during the day. Today being the day on which the Crown Prince of Japan arrived at Tokyo from his trip to Europe, the Japanese observe the day as a great holiday. The children from public schools are required to assemble at the front of the Government-General Office to shout "Banzai." I wonder if the Japanese really suppose that the average Korean especially the Korean boy or girl can have any sort of interest in the trip or the return of the Crown Prince. Only love can beget love. As long as the Korean sees in the acts of the Japanese official and private, a systematic plan of dispossessing him of every means of living, so long will it be, hopeless to expect him to show any real feeling of fellow countrymanship.

4. 9월 4일

4th. Sunday. Very cool in the morning.

尹明燮, a pupil at the 附屬 普通學校 tells me that yesterday when the boys of his school were assembled in the school to go to "felicitation meeting 奉祝金,“ the boys of the sixth grade conspired among themselves to shout mansei for Korea instead of for the Crown Prince. The plot becoming known the teachers investigated the matter and the sixth grades armed with pebbles in their pockets and even in trousers. When asked what they intended to do with the stones one of the little fellows said: "We intend to stone any fellow who should shout Banzai for the Crown Prince."
14
Two boys were expelled as the result. The insincere policy of the authorities and the offensive behavior of the Japanese residents can never win the good will of the Korean people.

12. 9월 12일

31
12th. Monday. Beautiful. Hot during the day.

32
10 a.m. somebody threw dynamites into the rooms of the private secretary and of the Treasurer, in the Government General Office. The motive only a matter of guess. Perfectly useless act of violence, if done by a Korean.
33
3 p.m. the 臨時 朝鮮産業大會 held its meeting at the Y.M.C.A. building: A resolution embodying the aspirations and desire of the Korean people was passed. I. all industrial enactment and measures should have as their basis, the interest of the Korean people. II. The interest of the mass rather than that of the few, should be considered.
34
Called on Mr. Cynn and the returned missionaries, the Gerdines, the Wassons, and the Gu___.

The Annual Conference of the S.M.E. Church of Korea began its sessions in the 宗橋 Church. The announcement that Bishop Lambuth couldn't be present, owing to a serious operation he had undergone in a hospital in Yokohama, made many of our hearts sad. His letter full of loving and thoughtful message made a deep impression on the Conference. May God grant that he will be restored to health so that he may yet give many years of his mature wisdom and acceptable service to the great mission fields which owe so much to him in the past.

15. 9월 15일

41
15th. Thursday. Bright. Hot during the day.

16. 9월 16일

43
16th. Friday. Bright and warm.

44
5 p.m. the S.M. Churches of Seoul entertained the members of the Conference to a Korean supper at 食道園. Shame there is not a clean and well equipped and well conducted Korean restaurant where we could entertain strangers.
45
7 p.m. went to 菁松亭 where a supper was given to Mr. Cynn. His report of the Pan Pacific Educational Conference was very interesting. At his suggestion a Pan Pacific Association of Korea was organized with Prince Pak Y.H. as its President. I was elected Vice President. Messrs. Cynn and Kim Dong Sung were elected secretaries. The official birthday of the organization was to be the 17th Sept. The date on which Dalboa first discovered the Pacific Ocean in 1513.

17. 9월 17일

47
17th. Saturday. Beautiful.

Mr. Frank Brockman called and complained that the expenditure of the Central Y.M.C.A. has outstripped its receipts, that, if things don't mend, there will be shortage of no less than ¥7,000.00 at the end of the year; and that Messrs. Yi Sang Chai, and Kim Pil Soo, drawing high salaries from the Y., have been doing other people's work to the utter neglect of their Y.M.C.A. duties. The Y.M.C.A. Monthly under the tile of 靑年 was budgeted to run on ¥900.00. But in eight months it has already eaten up ¥1,600.00 or more. The Y.M.C.A. school with the Ryuk Jung Soo at its head is digging a deep hole in the coffers of the Y. Mr. Brockman is further very much disturbed by the fact that Mr. Cynn has decided to go back to Hawaii to attend the Press Congress. Mr. B's objections: 1. Mr. Cynn should not leave his work when its finance is in such an alarming condition. 2. The agitated state of the Korean mind in view of the coming conference in Washington, is full of possible explosions. The Y. with its hundreds students needs a wise and strong leader guide and steer its course between the devil and the deep. 3. The general secretary of a Y.M.C.A. can have no possible connection with the World Press Congress. 4. Mr. M. of the International Committee of New York is soon to be here looking into the conditions of the work. It would be a matter of great surprise to him to find Mr. Cynn away from his proper work to attend a meeting outside of the sphere of Y.M.C.A.

Worshipped at 宗橋 Church.

19. 9월 19일

53
19th. Monday. Rain.

Yesterday afternoon the Tai Wha Women's Institute was dedicate. All the three speakers were foreigners. Miss Myers must have thought that, the Institution being financed by foreigners, there were no need of taking Koreans into consideration. She is partly right and financially correct. But the work itself is intended for the good of the Koreans and not of the foreigners. Hence it is of the greatest importance that the wishes, prejudices and sensibilities should be consulted and respected. Indeed this spirit of "We-pay-therefore-we-don't-care-for-your-opinion-ism counts, more than any other single cause, for the comparative failure of the missionary enterprises in Korea.

20th. Tuesday. Cloudy.

I was elected by the Annual Conference a lay delegate to the General Conference of 1922. While I thank the brethren for the honor they have done me I don't think I can go. In the first place my countrymen in America will make my visit a painful situation. Another think is that I can't very well persuade myself into the illusion that the pleasure of seeing America once more can compensate for the pain of being separate from my precious little ones even for a few months. Then again, what good did my visit to America in 1910 do me or anybody else?

Received a long letter from Dr. Kim You Taik. As an answer to my suggestion to him to return he says: "Mr. Yun, I would come out under any condition if it be the will of God as the some cranks have tried to make me believe that short of rubbish. Why the just God should have wanted a Korean to work the identical work with an equal efficiency in lesser salary and lower status than an American. ... It really breaks my heart to think that I am not in position to give my medical service to my people when I have now the adequate training from sixteen years' self-denial and hard-work. That is practically the same unhappy situation confronts every educated man." etc. I understand his position and sympathize with him for his dilemma but I can't approve of his conclusion. The first and last question he should ask himself "Have I anything to give for the good of my people?" If the answer is in the affirmative―as he says that he has "the adequate training" in the way of "Medical service―then it is his duty, his business to give that service to his people, without bothering himself about the justice or injustice of the Mission Board.

Mr. Cynn is laid up with disease. If he doesn't get up in a day or two his trip to Hawaii will have to be postponed for the present.

Worshipped at 宗橋 Church as usual. Mr. Ryang informed the congregation that he had received the news that Bishop Lambuth was getting worse.

26. 9월 26일

73
26th.Monday. Rain. Very disagreeable day.

74
Mr. 山縣悌三郞 tells me that the Japanese authorities fell sensitive about the fact that the Koreans started a Pan Pacific Association on the very day on which the Japanese in Seoul organized identically the same association viz: on the 17th September, he advised me either to unite with the Japanese P.P. Ass. or to disband the Korean branch as I would expose myself to the suspicion of the police. He further informed me that the changed attitude of Mr. H.C. has displeased every Japanese. One can't please both parts.
75
Kim Dong Sung took supper with me. He is going to the Press Congress to be held in Honolulu.

27. 9월 27일

77
27th. Tuesday. Rain on and off all day long. Very disagreeable day.

78
About 7:30 p.m. a young man, looking like a student, a perfect stranger to me, came in and handed me a letter purposed to have been written by Pastor Sohn in Shanghai enclosed in it a circular from the treasurer of the P.G. Yi Si Yong, asking for money. Pastor Shon wants me to attend the Disarmament Conference in Washington as a representative of the Korean people.
79
Did the Korean representatives get anything from the Peace Conference at Paris? If I can be of any service to the Korean people by being present at the Washington Conference, I can do more by staying at home contributing my little to the education of the rising generation. Japan will never give up Korea without being compelled; and I can conceive no possible circumstance that may compel Japan to do so at the coming conference in Washington. One of the superstitious beliefs of the Korean―a belief that has been a curse to the people―is that no one can or may serve his country except through politics. A man who tills his land with diligence and helps advancing the educational facilities of his village is doing more good to the ultimate success of the Korean race than all the patriotic speakers in Washington may do under present circumstances.

28. 9월 28일

81
28th. Wednesday. Gloomy and chilly.

82
Mr. Ryang informs me the Bishop Lambuth passed away the day before yesterday!

29. 9월 29일

84
29th. Thursday. Misty.

85
The disk of the sun red and set against a hazy heaven―like a full moon―but no sunshine. This is the second day of the phenomenon. Left seoul by 12:20 p.m. train for Song Do with 恩姬. Arrived Song Do home 3:30 p.m.
86
Mr. 山縣悌三郞 told me the other night that my absence from the garden party given by the Government General on the Emperor's birthday last year was noted, and that I should not repeat the mistake this year. While I thank Mr. Y. for his advice I feel sort uncanny to learn that my movements are so closely watched.
87
When I called on Mr. Cynn yesterday afternoon, I met an old retired Methodist minister and his wife, Rev. and Mrs. B. who are taking their rest in a world-round trip. Mr. B. showed us a little book in which he has Abraham Lincoln's autograph, 1864. The old couple appeared quite sympathetic for the Korean people. From Mr. Cynn I learned that Kim Kui Sik had fallen out with the P.G. folks in Shanghai; and that Pastor Hyon had gone to the States airing himself as the Korean minister trying to dismiss Dr. Jai Sohn etc! Hyon has no doubt a streak of insanity in him. He did good as an evangelist in Korea and would have been infinitely more useful to the Korean as a preacher than he is as a politician.

30. 9월 30일

89
30th. Friday.

90
Song Do home. Pale sun, misty still. Precious 恩姬 seems enjoy her trip here―the chestnuts, grapes etc. I wish I could stay here a month or two with young children.
