A longtimeagotherelived a kingwhowasfamedforhiswisdomthroughalltheland. Nothingwashiddenfromhim, anditseemedasifnewsofthemostsecretthingswasbroughttohimthroughtheair. Buthehad a strangecustom; everydayafterdinner, whenthetablewascleared, andnooneelsewaspresent, a trustyservanthadtobringhimonemoredish. Itwascovered, however, andeventheservantdidnotknowwhatwasinit, neitherdidanyoneknow, forthekingnevertookoffthecovertoeatofituntilhewasquitealone.

Thishadgoneonfor a longtime, whenonedaytheservant, whotookawaythedish, wasovercomewithsuchcuriositythathecouldnothelpcarryingthedishintohisroom. Whenhehadcarefullylockedthedoor, heliftedupthecover, andsaw a whitesnakelyingonthedish. Butwhenhesawithecouldnotdenyhimselfthepleasureoftastingit, sohecutof a littlebitandputitintohismouth. Nosoonerhadittouchedhistonguethanheheard a strangewhisperingoflittlevoicesoutsidehiswindow. Hewentandlistened, andthennoticedthatitwasthesparrowswhowerechatteringtogether, andtellingoneanotherofallkindsofthingswhichtheyhadseeninthefieldsandwoods. Eatingthesnakehadgivenhimpowerofunderstandingthelanguageofanimals.
Andnowhehadtousehisownlegs, andwhenhehadwalked a longway, hecameto a largecity. Therewas a greatnoiseandcrowdinthestreets, and a manrodeuponhorseback, cryingaloud: 'Theking's daughterwants a husband; butwhoeverseeksherhandmustperform a hardtask, andifhedoesnotsucceedhewillforfeithislife.' Manyhadalreadymadetheattempt, butinvain; neverthelesswhentheyouthsawtheking's daughterhewassoovercomebyhergreatbeautythatheforgotalldanger, wentbeforetheking, anddeclaredhimself a suitor.

Sohewasledouttothesea, and a goldringwasthrownintoit, beforehiseyes; thenthekingorderedhimtofetchthisringupfromthebottomofthesea, andadded: 'Ifyoucomeupagainwithoutityouwillbethrowninagainandagainuntilyouperishamidthewaves.' Allthepeoplegrievedforthehandsomeyouth; thentheywentaway, leavinghimalonebythesea.
